Gust

Gust is the other way Start can look: instead of the menu above the taskbar, a single search bar opens in the middle of the screen. Choose it in Settings, Desktop, under Start. From then on, Super and the Start button open Gust.

Gust searches the same things as Start’s search, with the same order of results. Before you type, it shows the apps you open most and your open windows.

The highlighted result shows a preview on the right when it has one: a live picture of a window, an emoji at full size, a picture or text from the clipboard history, or the answer to a question.

Quick answers

Ask about dates, times and numbers in plain words. The answer comes up first, and Enter copies it. Start’s search answers the same questions.

Months, weekdays and words such as today or tomorrow work in the language Luft uses, and in English. Questions can also be asked in German, Albanian, Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian, such as Tage bis zum 27. März, sa ditë deri më 27 mars, koliko dana do 27. ožujka or колико дана до 27. марта. Numbers follow your region, so 1.234,5 works where a comma marks decimals. A year left out means the next time that day comes, or the last time when you ask how long since.

Places are cities and their time zones as you’d write them, including common abbreviations such as EST, CET and UTC. Currencies use the day’s reference rates, which Luft downloads the first time you convert a currency on a given day and keeps for offline use. Nothing is downloaded until then.

Without the taskbar

The same page in Settings can take away the Start button or the whole taskbar. Without the taskbar, a small corner at the bottom right keeps the clock and status icons: the icons open quick settings, the clock opens notifications, and the Luft mark, unless you took it away too, opens Start. Windows switch with Alt+Tab, from all windows or from Gust, which lists them as soon as it opens.

In tablet mode, the taskbar and its Start button always come back, since there may be no keyboard to press Super on.
